How much mining can the earth sustain? Resource consumption under scrutiny

Photos from Altenberg and BoliviaHow much mining can our earth endure – and what responsibility do we bear in this regard? We would like to invite to a two-day conference in Altenberg on September 4–6, 2026. The focus will be on the planned lithium mining in the area – as well as global developments surrounding this coveted raw material. This is where ecological concerns, economic interests, and questions of global justice collide.

On Friday evening, we’ll start with a film screening about a region in eastern Germany that has been particularly impacted by mining, followed by a discussion with one of the film’s protagonists.

On Saturday, we will engage in dialogue: Through presentations, workshops, and a visit to the lithium project region on the German and Czech sides of the border. We will learn about different perspectives and have the opportunity to exchange questions.

On Sunday, we invite to celebrate a church service. Afterwards, we will develop concrete ideas for action for a more equitable use of raw materials in practical workshops.

Anyone who is interested, committed, and open to exchange is invited – people from churches, civil society, initiatives, and groups who want to work for an environmentally conscious and equitable future. Contributions will be translated into German or English.

We ask overnight guests to pay a participation fee of 50 euros. Please register as soon as possible, or by June 14, 2026, at the latest here.
