Seminar 4

The role of Germany in achieving access to water here and worldwide

SEM04_POLITK-300x388.jpg

German policy has important contributions to make to the realisation of the right to water and sanitation. This also applies in Germany, where the years of low precipitation since 2018 have led to distribution issues in some regions. The public debate continues to focus on the strain on drinking water reserves caused by inputs from agriculture, the consequences of the use of flowing waters as energy suppliers, and issues relating to the public or private provision of drinking water.

But the use of water for the production of imported goods must also be urgently reduced. The so-called water footprint maps this consumption and shows that more is consumed in Germany than is proportionally available.

Finally, Germany has important contributions to make to ensure people's rights to access (drinking) water in other countries. Within the framework of development cooperation, the German government supports projects in this area, which is also of enormous importance for health care. In addition, the Federal Government participates in various global bodies and processes that have taken up the issue of water supply.
